In a devastating incident, at least five people lost their lives and 35 others were injured when a bomb exploded during prayer at a mosque in Nigeria's Maiduguri on Wednesday night. The police have suggested that the blast may be a suicide attack, citing the recovery of a suspected suicide vest and eyewitness accounts.
According to Nahum Daso, the spokesperson for Borno state police command, preliminary investigations indicate that the explosion was likely caused by a suicide bomber. The area is currently being swept for secondary devices.
This attack is the latest in a series of violent incidents in Nigeria's troubled northern region, where the government is battling multiple armed groups, including Boko Haram and ISWAP. Since 2009, thousands of people have been killed, and millions displaced, according to the United Nations.
While no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, analysts point out that Boko Haram's use of suicide bombers has been a hallmark of their tactics in the past. Although the group's use of this method has decreased in recent years, they still possess the capability to launch such attacks. A similar incident in July 2024, which involved a three-pronged suicide attack on a wedding ceremony in Borno, raised concerns about a possible resurgence of this tactic.
