North Korea Warns of Nuclear Domino Effect as Seoul-US Submarine Deal Sparks Regional Tensions

North Korea has condemned a recent agreement between South Korea and the US to develop nuclear-powered submarines, warning that it could spark a nuclear arms race in the region. The deal, finalized last week, includes plans for South Korea to expand its authority over uranium enrichment and spent-fuel reprocessing, as part of a broader security and trade agreement with the US. In a commentary carried by the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on Tuesday, North Korea described the submarine programme as a 'dangerous attempt at confrontation' that would destabilize the Asia-Pacific region and global security. Pyongyang claims that South Korea's possession of nuclear submarines would trigger a 'nuclear domino phenomenon' in the region, sparking a hot arms race and making it impossible to control nuclear proliferation. This warning comes as South Korea's President Lee Jae Myung has offered to hold military talks with North Korea to prevent border clashes, marking a significant shift from the hawkish stance of his predecessor. However, North Korea has yet to respond to the overtures, and the tension remains high in the region, with the North firing a ballistic missile just a day after the South proposed talks.
