Pakistan has passed a constitutional amendment, paving the way for General Asim Munir to become the country's first Chief of Defence Forces, a powerful new position aimed at enhancing coordination among its armed forces. The 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill proposes changes to Article 243, governing matters related to the armed forces, and allows the President to appoint the Chief of Defence Forces on the advice of the Prime Minister. The new bill also empowers the government to promote individuals from the armed forces to top ranks, including Field Marshal, Marshal of the Air Force, and Admiral of the Fleet. The post of Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee will expire on November 27, 2025, effectively consolidating top military authority under Munir's command. The move comes after the Pakistan government promoted Asim Munir to the rank of Field Marshal, a title that carries lifelong privileges. This overhaul of the military structure is influenced by lessons from the four-day conflict with India in May, which highlighted the need for integrated operational responses in modern warfare. Following the conflict, Munir's elevation to Field Marshal and the creation of the new Chief of Defence Forces post imply Islamabad's attempt to project stronger military leadership amid regional tensions.
