Pakistan-Afghanistan Tensions Escalate: 5 Killed in Fresh Border Clashes
The two sides blamed each other for starting the overnight firing that resulted in killing of four civilians and one soldier on the Afghan side.   | World News
A fresh wave of violence has hit the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan, leaving at least five people dead and several others wounded. The clash, which erupted late on Friday night, marked the latest escalation in tensions between the two South Asian neighbors.
According to reports, Afghan officials claimed that Pakistani forces initiated the attack, firing mortar shells into the Badani area. However, Pakistani officials countered that Afghan forces had opened fire first, prompting a response from Pakistani forces.
The fighting, which lasted until dawn on Saturday, left four civilians and one soldier dead on the Afghan side. Five other civilians were reportedly wounded in the exchange, while three people suffered minor injuries.
The latest flare-up is a stark reminder of the deep-seated tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan. The two countries have been at odds since October, when deadly clashes broke out along the border. The escalation followed a series of militant attacks in Pakistan, which the country blamed on the Pakistani Taliban (TTP) – an ally of the Afghan Taliban.
While a ceasefire is currently in place, the peace talks between the two countries have been unsuccessful in bringing about a lasting truce. The strained relations have been further complicated by the presence of TTP fighters in Afghanistan, who have taken refuge in the country since the Taliban seized power in 2021.
As the situation remains volatile, both countries are accusing each other of instigating the latest clash. The situation is a stark reminder of the delicate nature of regional politics and the need for sustained diplomatic efforts to resolve the differences between the two nations.
