Pakistan is poised to seal a landmark deal with Bangladesh for the sale of its JF-17 Thunder fighter jets, a move that underscores the strengthening of ties between the two nations. The development comes as Islamabad and Dhaka work to deepen their defense cooperation and build a long-term strategic partnership.
According to a statement from Pakistan's military, Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu and Bangladesh Air Force chief Hasan Mahmood Khan held talks on the potential procurement of the JF-17 jets. The aircraft, jointly developed by China and Pakistan, is a multi-role combat aircraft.
The talks also covered the delivery of Super Mushshak trainer aircraft to Bangladesh, along with a comprehensive training and support system. Pakistan has assured Bangladesh of fast-tracked delivery, signaling a significant boost to their defense ties.
The development is a significant step in the renewal of ties between the two countries, which had been strained in the past. Pakistan is also in talks with Azerbaijan and has finalized a $4 billion deal with the Libyan National Army to supply JF-17 jets. The country has claimed that the JF-17 has proven its capabilities in recent conflicts, including the May conflict with India.
In another sign of improved relations, Bangladesh's national carrier, Biman Bangladesh Airlines, is set to launch non-stop flights to Pakistan's Karachi from January 29, marking a return to direct flights between the two nations after a six-year hiatus.
