A 25-year-old man suspected of stabbing three women in the Paris metro on Friday has been moved to a psychiatric hospital, authorities announced on Saturday. The suspect, who was arrested and later released from custody, was deemed to be in a fragile state of health.
The attack occurred on Line 3 of the metro, which runs through central Paris, as the city celebrated the end-of-year festivities. Three women were injured but not critically. Following an investigation, police located the suspect in the Val d'Oise region north of Paris using surveillance footage and mobile-tracking tools.
According to prosecutors, continued police custody was not suitable for the suspect due to his health concerns. The man, a Malian citizen, had previously been imprisoned for aggravated theft and sexual assault in January 2024. He was required to leave France after his release in July but was held in an administrative detention centre due to a lack of necessary travel documents.
Interior Minister Laurent Nunez had urged "maximum vigilance" during the festive season due to a heightened terrorist threat and the risk of public disorder. The attack has raised concerns about security on public transport, a focus area for authorities during this time.
