Russian President Vladimir Putin has emphasized that Moscow's involvement in the Ukraine conflict was a response to Western-backed actions, rather than an initiator of the war. In a recent interview with India Today, Putin stated that Russia's 'special military operation' aims to end the conflict that was sparked by the West's support for Ukrainian nationalists.
Putin argued that Ukraine's actions, backed by the West, led to the conflict in eastern Ukraine, particularly in the Donbas region. He pointed out that Ukraine has banned the Russian language and Orthodox Church, prompting Russia to take a firm stance to protect its interests and people living in the region.
Putin also highlighted the 2014 overthrow of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, which he said was orchestrated by the West and triggered the events in Crimea and southeastern Ukraine. He claimed that Russia attempted to resolve the issue through peaceful means but was met with violence from Ukrainian forces, forcing Russia to intervene.
The Russian President stressed that his country will not back down until its goals are achieved, including the 'liberation' of Donbas. Putin's comments come as he embarks on a two-day visit to India, where he will meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss bilateral relations and regional issues.
