A Reddit user known only as 'John' played a crucial role in solving the Brown University shooting case, which claimed the life of MIT professor Nuno Loureiro. The suspect, identified as 48-year-old Claudio Neves Valente, died by self-inflicted gunshot wound after authorities tracked him down to a storage facility in Salem. The investigation was led by the Rhode Island Attorney General's office, with the help of a Reddit post from 'John', a homeless individual who sleeps in the basement of the Barus and Holley building. John's post, which went viral, provided crucial details about the suspect's car, including its make, model, and license plate number. According to the affidavit, John met the suspect on December 13, 2025, at Brown University, and made eye contact with him several times. He also reported that the suspect would loop back to his car, a grey Nissan with Florida plates, and would change direction when he saw John. John's Reddit post read: 'I'm being dead serious. The police need to look into a grey Nissan with Florida plates, possibly a rental. That was the car he was driving. It was parked in front of the little shack behind the Rhode Island Historical Society on the Cooke St side.' The authorities reviewed the surveillance videos further, located the grey/blue Nissan sedan, and noted that it 'appeared consistent with the make and model of a Nissan Sentra sedan.' The car was linked to the suspect, and the investigation led to the identification of Claudio Neves Valente. Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha praised 'John' for his efforts, saying: 'He blew this case right open. He blew it open.' The case serves as an example of how a single Reddit post can lead to the solution of a complex crime investigation.
