After 15 years in the making, the iconic RoboCop statue has finally found a permanent home in Detroit. The 11-foot-tall, 3,500-pound bronze statue has been drawing crowds since its unveiling on Wednesday, and despite a snowstorm, fans were eager to catch a glimpse of the beloved cyborg. The RoboCop franchise, which debuted in 1987, portrayed a dystopian Detroit plagued by crime. However, the city has undergone significant transformation since then. Violent crime rates have decreased, and homicide numbers have dropped to levels not seen since the mid-1960s. City officials, who initially expressed reservations, ultimately gave their blessing for the statue's installation. The statue's journey began in 2010, when a tweet sparked a campaign to bring a RoboCop statue to Detroit. A Kickstarter campaign in 2012 raised over $67,000, and the statue was completed in 2017. However, it remained stored away until it found a new home in Eastern Market, a vibrant shopping and entertainment district just northeast of downtown. Jim Toscano, co-owner of the FREE AGE film production company, where the statue now stands, believes that RoboCop is a symbol of hope and redemption for the city. 'Detroit has come a long way,' he said. 'You put in a little nostalgia, and that helps.' For James Campbell, a donor to the original Kickstarter campaign, the statue represents a sense of ownership and pride. 'I'm here to see this big, beautiful, bronze piece of art,' he said. 'What a piece of cinematic history to represent the city of Detroit.'
