Russian nuclear-capable Tu-95MS bombers conducted a routine flight over the Barents and Norwegian Seas, north of Scandinavia, on Thursday. According to Russia's Defence Ministry, the long-range bombers were escorted by fighter jets from foreign countries at certain points during their journey.
The ministry stated that such flights are a regular occurrence and comply with international law. The Defence Ministry did not specify the exact date of the flight or the countries whose fighter jets escorted the bombers.
This development comes on the heels of recent incidents where South Korea and Japan scrambled fighter jets in response to military aircraft flights by Russia and China near their territories. In a separate incident, two Russian Tu-95 bombers were spotted flying with two Chinese H-6 bombers in the East China Sea earlier this month.
The Russian Defence Ministry emphasized that its military operations are transparent and in accordance with international norms. The incident highlights the ongoing military activities in the region and the need for countries to maintain open communication channels to avoid misunderstandings.
