A devastating drone attack in the Russian-occupied Kherson region has left at least 24 people dead and over 50 injured, according to Vladimir Saldo, the region's installed head. The attack, which occurred in the village of Khorly, targeted a cafe and a hotel where people were celebrating New Year's Eve.
The Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, has made no comment on the attack, instead focusing on the ongoing drone strikes by Russia on Ukraine's energy infrastructure. Russia claimed to have launched over 200 drones against Ukraine overnight, targeting various regions across the country.
The alleged drone attack in Kherson sparked a massive fire that hindered rescue efforts, with emergency services eventually bringing the blaze under control. Russia's Investigative Committee has launched a criminal investigation into the incident.
Meanwhile, Ukraine has reported an attack on energy facilities in the western region of Volyn, cutting power to over 100,000 people. Russia has continued to strike energy and civilian targets, leaving thousands without electricity, water, and heating in freezing temperatures.
The ongoing conflict has seen both sides escalating their attacks, with Ukraine targeting Russian energy infrastructure in December, hitting the most assets since the war began. Russia has also maintained regular strikes on energy and civilian targets, causing widespread disruption.
