Saudi-Led Coalition Threatens Military Action Against Yemen Separatists as Tensions Escalate
Saudi-led coalition warns of intervention against Yemen separatists
The Saudi-led coalition has issued a warning, stating that it will intervene on behalf of Yemen's government if separatist forces do not withdraw from recently seized provinces. The warning comes after reported Saudi airstrikes on separatist positions in Yemen's Hadramawt province and amid calls from Washington for restraint in the rapidly escalating conflict.
Saudi Arabia's Defence Minister Khalid bin Salman urged the separatist Southern Transitional Council to peacefully hand over two regional governorates to the government, emphasizing the need for reason to prevail at this sensitive moment.
The UAE-backed STC, which seeks to revive the formerly independent state of South Yemen, has been making significant gains in recent weeks, expelling government forces and their allies. Supporters of the separatists have been gathering in cities, including Aden, to demand independence.
Experts say the STC's successes have embarrassed regional heavyweight Saudi Arabia, the main backer of the internationally recognized Yemeni government. Farea al-Muslimi, a Chatham House expert, warned that the situation could quickly deteriorate if the STC continues to cross Riyadh's 'red lines'.
The US has urged restraint and continued diplomacy, with a view to reaching a lasting solution. Yemen's government has asked the Saudi-led coalition to support its forces in Hadramawt province and take necessary military measures to protect civilians.
The escalating conflict has added pressure on ties between Saudi Arabia and the UAE, which support rival groups within Yemen's government. The government, a patchwork of groups including separatists, is held together by shared opposition to the Iran-backed Houthis, who control most of northern Yemen.
