Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has strongly condemned Israel's decision to recognize Somaliland as an independent state, calling it a threat to global and regional stability. In an emergency parliamentary session, Mohamud stated that Israel's move was 'tantamount to blunt aggression' against Somalia's sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity. The recognition of Somaliland by Israel, announced by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday, marks a significant shift in regional dynamics and challenges Somalia's long-standing opposition to secession. Netanyahu said the move was 'in the spirit of the Abraham Accords,' which led to Israel establishing diplomatic ties with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain in 2020. Somaliland's President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi welcomed the recognition and invited Netanyahu to visit his country. However, Somalia's government has strongly condemned the decision, calling it 'unlawful' and a 'deliberate attack' on its sovereignty. The European Union has also urged respect for Somalia's unity and called for 'meaningful dialogue' between Mogadishu and Somaliland to resolve their long-standing differences. The situation has raised concerns about regional stability and the potential consequences of Israel's recognition of Somaliland.
