A 19-year-old Brazilian man, Gerson de Melo Machado, tragically lost his life after attempting to enter a lion enclosure at the Arruda Câmara Zoobotanical Park in João Pessoa, Paraíba, Brazil. The incident, which occurred on Sunday morning, was caught on disturbing video footage that has surfaced online. According to eyewitnesses, Machado climbed over a 26-foot high fence before making his way down a nearby tree to reach the lioness's enclosure. As he descended, the lion inside the enclosure noticed his movement and waited patiently below. When Machado reached close to the ground, the lion reacted instantly, leaping at him. Despite trying to escape, Machado was unable to evade the lion's attack. The zoo has confirmed that the incident was the result of deliberate trespassing and has expressed condolences to Machado's family and friends. Machado, who had long aspired to become a lion tamer, had struggled with mental health issues throughout his life, including a diagnosis of schizophrenia. His mother also suffers from the same condition. The zoo has stated that the lion will not be euthanized and that the incident was 'completely unpredictable' and outside the park's routine. The facility has been closed to the public in the wake of the tragedy.
