A Texas court has handed down a 65-year prison sentence to 19-year-old Luke Garrett Resecker for his role in a devastating crash that claimed the lives of six members of an Indian-origin family in 2023. The tragedy occurred on December 26, 2023, when Resecker's truck veered into oncoming traffic, colliding with a minivan carrying the family of seven. The victims, who were traveling home from a family trip, included Rushil Barri, 28, and five relatives from Georgia: Naveena Potabathula, 36, Nageswararao Ponnada, 64, Sitamahalakshmi Ponnada, 60, 10-year-old Krithik Potabathula, and 9-year-old Nishidha Potabathula. Two young children were among the deceased. The sole survivor, Lokesh Potabathula, suffered life-altering injuries, including paralysis from the waist down. A passenger in Resecker's vehicle, 17-year-old Preston Glass, also sustained a traumatic brain injury, resulting in mental impairment. Investigations revealed that Resecker was under the influence of THC at the time of the crash. Toxicology tests confirmed the presence of active THC in his system. Resecker was initially charged with intoxication manslaughter, intoxication assault, and possession of controlled substances. Prosecutors characterized the crash as completely avoidable and a sobering reminder of the irreversible consequences of impaired and reckless driving. The victims' families will forever be affected by this tragedy, and justice has been served with Resecker's 65-year sentence.
