In a move aimed at safeguarding American interests, US President Donald Trump has declared a national emergency to shield Venezuelan oil revenue held by the US government from being seized by private creditors. The proclamation titled 'Safeguarding Venezuelan Oil Revenue for the Good of the American and Venezuelan People' emphasizes the preservation of these funds as crucial to US national security and foreign policy. According to the president, the potential seizure of these funds poses an 'unusual and extraordinary threat' to the nation. He invoked a national emergency to address this issue, linking it to the broader goals of maintaining regional stability, combating illicit narcotics, and countering 'malign actors' such as Iran and Hezbollah. The emergency order specifically targets 'Foreign Government Deposit Funds,' which include Venezuelan government funds held in designated Treasury accounts, generated from the sale of natural resources or diluents. Trump has prohibited any attachment or judicial process against these funds, unless specifically licensed. The move comes as the situation in Venezuela remains tense, following the capture and extradition of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife to the US, where they've been indicted. The US embassy in Caracas has also warned American citizens in Venezuela to leave the country immediately, citing security concerns and the inability of the US government to provide emergency assistance.
