US President Donald Trump signed a funding bill on Wednesday evening to bring an end to the longest government shutdown in American history. The shutdown, which lasted for weeks, had significant consequences, including the cancellation or delay of over 20,000 flights and the loss of paychecks for more than 1 million government workers. During the signing ceremony, Trump blamed the Democratic party for the shutdown's impact, stating that it had caused 'massive harm' to the economy and individuals. He highlighted the effects on federal contractors, small businesses, and those relying on food stamps. As the government resumes operations, it may take several days for full functionality to be restored. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy estimates that it will take approximately a week for flight restrictions at major airports to be lifted. The signed bill reverses the Trump administration's decision to fire federal employees, protects workers from further layoffs until January, and guarantees payment for affected workers once operations resume. Approximately 670,000 furloughed employees are expected to return to work, while another 670,000 who continued working without pay will receive back pay, including over 60,000 air traffic controllers and airport security staff.
