US President Donald Trump has hinted at a possible visit to India, stating that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a 'great man' and a 'friend.' Trump made the comments at the White House, while also reiterating his claim that India had largely stopped buying Russian oil. According to Trump, PM Modi has expressed a desire for him to visit India, and the two leaders have been in touch. When asked about a potential visit next year, Trump said 'it could be.' The Indian government has yet to confirm any details about a Trump visit, with an external affairs ministry spokesperson stating that they do not have any information to share at this time. The planned Quad Leaders summit, which was expected to take place in India this year, has been delayed due to scheduling issues and clashes with India's Republic Day celebrations. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has indicated that a leaders summit could take place in the first quarter of 2026. Despite tensions in the bilateral relationship earlier this year, ties between the US and India have warmed in recent months. The two countries have continued to cooperate on key issues, including defence and trade. A prospective meeting between Trump and Modi could signal a broader rapprochement in the relationship and accelerate key bilateral initiatives, including a trade deal. Both sides remain in talks to hammer out a bilateral trade deal, with Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal concluding two days of discussions with American officials in mid-October in a cordial atmosphere. The discussions created pathways for constructive and mutually beneficial bilateral trade talks.
