Trump Proposal: Sending Healthcare Funds Directly to Americans Amid Government Shutdown

US President Donald Trump has recommended that the government send hundreds of billions of dollars directly to Americans to purchase their own health insurance, rather than using it to fund health insurance companies. This proposal was made on Truth Social, where Trump called for terminating the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as ObamaCare, and claimed it provides the 'worst Healthcare anywhere in the World.' Trump's suggestion comes as the government shutdown continues, with Democrats pushing for a funding bill that includes healthcare subsidies for 24 million Americans. However, Republican Senators James Lankford and Lindsey Graham have expressed support for Trump's idea, which would require approval from both the House and Senate to become federal law. Currently, individuals can purchase health insurance policies directly from health insurers through the ACA marketplaces, which mainly serve those without employer coverage or government programs like Medicare and Medicaid. Trump has previously advocated for direct payments to taxpayers in other areas, including the Covid relief package. Despite the proposal, it remains uncertain whether Americans will receive direct payments for health insurance. For now, the focus remains on resolving the government shutdown and finding a solution to the expiring healthcare subsidies.
