The White House has expressed support for naming Washington's new $4 billion NFL stadium after President Donald Trump, citing his role in its construction. 'That would surely be a beautiful name, as it was President Trump who made the rebuilding of the new stadium possible,' said Karoline Leavitt, the President's press secretary. The White House made the remark after a report by ESPN suggested that Trump had expressed interest in seeing his name on the new stadium. However, the Washington Commanders, the team behind the project, have not confirmed any such discussions. The new stadium, a joint $4 billion venture between the team and the District, will be built on the site of the historic RFK Stadium in Washington D.C. and will feature a stadium, housing, green space, and a new sports complex along the Anacostia River. The city is contributing $1.1 billion, while the team is investing $2.7 billion. This is not the first time Trump has been involved in the project. In July, he threatened to hold up the deal by insisting that the team change its name from the Commanders back to the Redskins, a name that was considered offensive to Native Americans. Trump is expected to attend a game at the Commanders' current stadium, Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland, on Sunday, where American veterans will be honored at halftime. The team's spokesperson has declined to comment on the White House statement or the ESPN report, while the DC Mayor's office has also remained silent on the matter.
