British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is making a push for Poland to select Swedish defence group Saab's bid for a multi-billion-euro submarine contract. The deal, which may involve UK defence group Babcock, is part of Poland's effort to modernize its navy and bolster NATO ties amid rising tensions with Russia. According to sources, Starmer has signed a letter of support with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, which was included in Saab's final offer submitted in late October. The letter expresses confidence that the Swedish proposal would enhance security in the Baltic Sea. Poland is currently considering bids from several countries, including Germany, Italy, Spain, France, and South Korea. However, Saab's submarines are specifically tailored to the conditions of the Baltic Sea, giving the company a competitive edge. The UK government has emphasized its commitment to boosting the economy through defence exports, citing billions of pounds generated from warship and fighter jet deals. While Babcock declined to comment on its involvement in the bid, a British government spokesperson noted that the UK is making defence an engine for growth, creating jobs and strengthening alliances. A decision on the "Orka" programme, a key part of Poland's naval modernization, is expected within weeks. The programme aims to bolster NATO ties and enhance security in the region. The UK's efforts to secure the Saab deal are part of a broader trend of political jockeying around Europe for lucrative defence contracts as countries increase military spending in response to tensions with Russia.
