A coalition of 25 US state attorneys general has written to Shopify, urging the e-commerce platform to cut ties with websites selling unlicensed and illicit vapes. The letter, signed by attorneys general from California, Illinois, Arizona, and other states, as well as city authorities from New York and Puerto Rico, highlights the need for Shopify to cooperate with authorities in identifying and removing vape sellers that violate US laws. The US Food and Drug Administration has authorized 39 e-cigarette products for sale in the US, but the market is dominated by unregulated devices, often manufactured in China and sold with fruity or sweet flavors. California's Attorney General Rob Bonta emphasized that addressing illegal vape sales at their source can lead to faster and more effective progress. The attorneys general have expressed gratitude towards Shopify for removing some vape sellers identified by California in April, but stress that a more comprehensive solution is needed to mitigate the public health risks posed by unregulated vapes. This move is part of a broader effort to disrupt the multi-billion-dollar unregulated vape industry, which has faced crackdowns from authorities in recent years, including major raids and tariffs on Chinese imports.
