US Cracks Down on Global 'Dark Fleet' of Sanction-Busting Oil Tankers

The United States has seized a key oil tanker as part of its effort to disrupt a network of vessels that transport black-market oil around the world. The move is a significant escalation of the US's crackdown on the so-called 'dark fleet,' which has been used by countries including Russia, Iran, and Venezuela to evade sanctions.
According to officials, the US Coast Guard boarded the tanker, formerly known as the Bella 1, after it made a suspicious U-turn in the Caribbean and changed its name to the Marinera. The vessel was eventually seized with the help of a special-operations force in the North Sea.
The 'dark fleet' is a network of around 1,000 tankers that engage in deceptive activities to conceal their role in transporting sanctioned and illicit oil. These ships often turn off their transponders, fake their locations, and conduct hidden ship-to-ship transfers to disguise the origin of their oil.
The US's action is part of a wider effort to pressure Venezuela's government by targeting dark-fleet vessels that go into and out of the country's ports. About 70% of Venezuela's oil exports rely on sanctioned vessels to get around crippling US sanctions on the country's oil industry.
The US has indicated that it plans to seize more tankers in the weeks ahead, with several warships remaining in the Caribbean and Coast Guard teams in position to conduct more boardings. The Justice Department has also ramped up its efforts to seize tankers, with officials saying they can work up the necessary information to submit a seizure warrant to the court in a matter of weeks.
The move is seen as a major blow to the dark fleet, which has been used by countries to evade sanctions and fund their activities. The US's action is also a significant escalation of the conflict over Venezuela's oil industry, with the US seeking to exert maximum leverage over the country's government.
The US's efforts to disrupt the dark fleet are being led by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, who said 'the world's criminals are on notice. You can run, but you can't hide.' Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth added that 'the blockade of sanctioned and illicit Venezuelan oil remains in FULL EFFECT — anywhere in the world.'
