The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) may adopt new immigration measures, mirroring Donald Trump's 2017 travel ban, which affects 12 countries. According to internal documents from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Trump administration is preparing a policy change that could restrict Green Cards for foreign nationals from countries on the existing travel restriction list. The proposed regulations, part of Trump's broader immigration crackdown, aim to limit Green Card access to citizens from countries such as Afghanistan, Iran, and Somalia, among others. These countries are mostly in Africa and the Middle East. While the policy has not been finalized, it would likely impact individuals from countries with existing travel restrictions, excluding those with valid visas, Green Cards, or Special Immigrant Visas. The US Secretary of State also has the authority to grant exemptions on a case-by-case basis, if the individual's presence serves the national interest. Former Biden administration officials have criticized the proposed policy, calling it 'an escalation' of the Trump administration's assault on legal immigration. 'Having something that applies to you based on your country is absurd,' said Doug Rand, a former senior official at USCIS. 'This is a radical change that disrupts established expectations of individuals who have already settled here.' The USCIS has refused to comment on the internal draft documents, leaving uncertainty surrounding the implementation of the policy change. If adopted, the new regulations could have significant implications for foreign nationals seeking to enter the US and establish permanent residency.
