In a bold move to crack down on sanctions evasion, the United States has seized two oil tankers linked to Venezuela - a Russian-flagged vessel, Bella 1, and a Panama-flagged ship, Sophia. The Southern Command confirmed that both ships were under sanctions, with Sophia described as a 'stateless, sanctioned dark fleet motor tanker'. The US Coast Guard conducted a meticulously coordinated boarding of the vessels, which were either last docked in Venezuela or en route to it. The Bella 1 had attempted to evade capture by changing its flag and painting a new name on the hull, but the heroic crew of the USCGC Munro pursued the vessel across the high seas, braving treacherous storms. The UK provided support to the US in the seizure of the Bella 1, with the Royal Navy's RFA Tideforce tanker and the UK's air force providing surveillance support. Defense Secretary John Healey hailed the operation as a success, saying it was part of global efforts to crack down on sanctions busting. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem warned that the US would not relent in its mission to protect the American people and disrupt the funding of narco-terrorism. 'You can run, but you can't hide,' she said. 'We will never relent in our mission to protect the American people and disrupt the funding of narco-terrorism wherever we find it.' The seizure of the oil tankers is seen as a significant blow to the Russian-Iranian axis of sanctions evasion, which is accused of fueling terrorism, conflict, and misery in the Middle East and Ukraine. The US has made it clear that it will continue to take action against those who attempt to evade sanctions and threaten national security.
