US Tightens H-1B Visa Vetting: Global Applicants Face Expanded Online Checks
According to the embassy, the expanded vetting is intended to address alleged misuse of the H-1B programme.
The US has introduced comprehensive online presence checks for all H-1B and H-4 visa applicants worldwide, as part of its efforts to curb abuse of the work visa program and ensure national security. Starting December 15, the Department of State has expanded its online reviews for these visas, which applies globally to applicants of all nationalities.
According to the US Embassy in India, this measure is aimed at addressing alleged misuse of the H-1B program while still allowing US companies to hire the best temporary foreign workers. The expanded vetting process is part of the US government's crackdown on perceived abuse of the H-1B system, which has been linked to concerns over illegal immigration and national security.
The H-1B visa is widely used by American technology firms, with Indian professionals making up a significant portion of recipients. This move has already had consequences, with thousands of pre-scheduled H-1B interviews in India being postponed by several months. Applicants who had traveled to India for renewals have been left stranded without valid visas to return to their US jobs.
Immigration lawyers have expressed concerns over the uncertainty and delays caused by the new policy. The US State Department has stated that online presence checks are not new and have been a part of the visa screening process for student and exchange visas. However, the expanded scrutiny now covers H-1B workers and their dependents.
As the US continues to prioritize national security and curb abuse of the visa program, applicants are advised to apply early and be prepared for longer processing times. The US Embassy in India has urged applicants to stay informed and seek guidance from the relevant authorities.
