Veterans Day, observed on November 11, honors American military veterans and their service. While it's a federal holiday, the impact on US markets and businesses varies. The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq remain open for regular trading hours, with stock traders at work. However, the US bond market is closed due to the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association's (SIFMA) holiday calendar. Federal buildings, courts, and DMV offices are closed in major cities like New York and Los Angeles. Local and state organizations join the federal observance by shutting down as well. Historically, the NYSE used to close on Veterans Day but started observing a two-minute trading halt in 1954. In recent years, both exchanges have honored the occasion with a moment of silence. While the Federal Reserve Bank of New York's holiday calendar suggests closures, the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association sets the guidelines for the bond industry. On Veterans Day, USPS will not deliver mail, but UPS and FedEx will continue to offer many of their standard services. Bank locations are mostly closed, but customers can still complete transactions online or at ATMs. Most shops and eateries will remain open, with some offering complimentary meals or discounts to veterans and active-duty military personnel in recognition of their service.
