Winter Storm Wreaks Havoc: 1,600 Flights Canceled, Thousands Delayed at JFK, LaGuardia Airports
The JFK Airport flight tracker reported delays and cancellations across Delta, JetBlue, Qatar, American, Alaska, Cathay Pacific, British Airways, and Etihad.
A powerful winter storm slammed into the New York area on Friday, crippling air travel across the region. According to FlightAware, over 1,600 flights have been canceled, with JetBlue Airways Corp. bearing the brunt of the cancellations, accounting for more than 200 flights.
The storm's impact was felt at several major airports, including John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport, where delays and cancellations were widespread. As of 1:30 p.m. EST, FlightAware reported the following cancellations:
- JetBlue: 225 flights
- Delta Air Lines: 211 flights
- Republic Airways: 157 flights
- Southwest: 140 flights
- American Airlines: 97 flights
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a warning, predicting 5-9 inches of snow in the New York City area from 4 p.m. Friday to 1 p.m. Saturday. The NWS advised travelers to exercise extreme caution and consider delaying non-essential travel. If travel is unavoidable, drivers should be prepared with emergency kits, including flashlights, food, water, and other essential items.
