A massive power outage swept through multiple cities in South Dakota and Wyoming on Thursday, leaving nearly 60,000 people without electricity. The affected areas included Casper, Mills, Evansville, Glenrock, and Sheridan, with the outages beginning around 12:45 PM and persisting intermittently. Some speculated that the fire at the Dave Johnston Power Plant in Wyoming might be connected to the widespread blackouts. However, initial investigations suggest otherwise. Cowboy State Daily reported that the fire at the power plant occurred after the outages, ruling out any direct link. In a separate update, Black Hills Energy attributed the outage to a transmission facility outside their system. The Wyoming Department of Homeland Security Director, Lynn Budd, also pointed to the aurora borealis as a potential cause, although its impact is still being assessed. As the investigation unfolds, many areas remain without power, highlighting the complexity of the situation.
