Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy is set to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris on Monday to finalize a historic aviation agreement, which includes the supply of advanced warplanes, air-defence capabilities, and missiles. The deal aims to bolster Ukraine's military strength against Russia's ongoing invasion. The escalating conflict has seen a surge in Russian drone and missile attacks on Ukraine, with Moscow reporting significant ground advances in the southeastern Zaporizhzhia region. In response, Zelenskiy has been seeking more military support from France, which has been hesitant due to budgetary constraints. Despite these challenges, Macron has pledged to provide additional Mirage fighter jets and Aster 30 surface-to-air missiles to Ukraine. Sources close to the matter suggest that Monday's visit may yield even more significant deals, including a 10-year strategic aviation agreement that would provide Ukraine with Dassault-made Rafale combat jets. The agreement would be a significant step towards Ukraine's goal of increasing its warplane fleet to 250, including the U.S. F-16 and Sweden's Gripen. However, operating the advanced jets would require a rigorous training program for pilots. The deals are expected to be financed through a combination of existing French stocks and long-term orders, although the details remain unclear. French officials have stated that the aim is to 'put French excellence in the arms industry at the service of Ukraine's defence' and enable it to respond effectively to Russian aggression. Zelenskiy's visit will include a briefing by manufacturers, including Dassault, followed by the signing of a letter of intent and contracts. A separate forum will also be held to explore cooperation between Ukrainian and French firms in the drone sector.
