New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, is set to be sworn-in on January 1, 2026, despite false claims circulating online that his inauguration had been canceled. The unfounded rumors stemmed from a satirical article published in Esspots, a website that describes itself as a platform for 'hilarious stories and parodies' about US politics and society. Mamdani won the mayoral election, defeating Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa, but has since faced scrutiny from Republicans. Representative Randy Fine from Florida had called for a review of Mamdani's naturalization process, suggesting potential 'fraud or violation of the rules.' Representative Andy Ogles from Tennessee also requested a Department of Justice probe into Mamdani's citizenship, alleging he had lied about his involvement with the Democratic Socialists of America when he became a naturalized citizen in 2018. Additionally, Mamdani has faced criticism for seeking donations to support his transition team's efforts to improve New York City just a day after winning the election. Despite these controversies, Mamdani's swearing-in ceremony will proceed as scheduled.
