Carrie Everett, the 2024 Miss North Carolina winner, has passed away at the age of 22 after a courageous battle with stomach cancer. Diagnosed in July 2025, her family confirmed the news of her passing on Easter Sunday, April 5.
Everett, a vocal performance student at the University of North Carolina, had taken a break from college to undergo chemotherapy. Despite plans to return to college, her family launched a GoFundMe page in March to raise money for her treatment, stating that chemotherapy was not working.
Everett made history as the fourth Black woman from North Carolina to win the title since 1937. She used her platform to encourage students in historically black colleges and universities to take advantage of scholarship and professional opportunities.
The Miss North Carolina organization released a statement acknowledging Everett's contributions and challenging minority and socially marginalized students to focus on goal setting and personal development.
