Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth has been appointed as the country's next Army chief, succeeding General Upendra Dwivedi, who retires on June 30. Seth, currently the Army's vice chief, will hold office until August 31, 2028.
He is the first officer from the Armoured Corps to lead the service in nearly three decades, following in the footsteps of General S Roy Chowdhury, who held the top position between 1994 and 1997.
Seth, an alumnus of the National Defence Academy and the Indian Military Academy, has had a distinguished military career spanning nearly four decades. He has commanded various units, including the armoured regiment Skinner's Horse, an armoured brigade, and a strike corps on the western front.
He has also held several key appointments, including brigadier general staff (operations) at South Western Command and director general (discipline, ceremonial and welfare) at Army headquarters.
Seth's appointment comes at a pivotal moment as the armed forces advance theatreisation, a long-awaited reform designed to integrate the military's resources for future conflicts.
