California Assembly Recognises November 8 as Diwali Day

California State Assembly recognises November 8, 2026, as Diwali Day, honouring Indian Americans and celebrating the festival’s message of hope, unity and triumph of good over evil.

The California State Assembly has adopted a resolution recognising November 8, 2026, as Diwali Day and encouraging people across the state to join in celebrations of the festival of lights.

The resolution expressed deep respect and appreciation for Indian Americans and the wider Indian diaspora in California and around the world on the occasion of Diwali.

Diwali, one of the most widely celebrated festivals of Indian origin, is observed in different ways by communities across the country and around the world. The California Assembly resolution noted that the festival symbolises the triumph of good over evil and carries messages of hope, positivity, humility and kindness.

The resolution also highlighted the importance of overcoming struggles, embracing positive values and maintaining compassion despite personal challenges. By recognising Diwali, California has underscored the cultural contributions and heritage of its Indian American community.

The recognition comes as Diwali continues to gain wider visibility across the United States, with communities, institutions and public authorities increasingly acknowledging the festival as an important part of the country’s multicultural landscape.

Earlier, several US states, including Delaware, New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts, also issued special proclamations commemorating August 15 as India Day, celebrating India’s Independence Day, rich cultural heritage and diversity.

The California Assembly’s recognition of November 8 as Diwali Day is expected to further strengthen cultural understanding and highlight the longstanding ties between California and the Indian American community.
