A 19-year-old student from a Himachal Pradesh government college has died due to severe injuries sustained during a brutal case of ragging and sexual assault. The incident occurred on September 18, 2025, and the student died on December 26 while undergoing treatment in a Ludhiana hospital. According to the student's father, his daughter was beaten by three senior students - Harshita, Aakriti, and Komolika - and subjected to obscene acts by a college professor, Ashok Kumar. The father alleged that his daughter suffered severe mental stress and fear after the incidents, which led to a rapid deterioration in her health. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has taken serious note of the incident and formed a fact-finding committee to investigate the matter. The UGC has assured that student safety is paramount and that the culprits will face stringent action. Police have registered a case against the three students and the professor under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Himachal Pradesh Educational Institution (Prohibition of) Ragging Act, 2009. Investigations are underway, and the police have collected medical records, video evidence, and statements from all concerned. The case gained momentum after a video, allegedly recorded by the student before her death, went viral on social media. In the video, the victim accused the professor of indecent acts, mental harassment, and intimidation when she objected to his behavior. Preliminary investigations indicate that the student was enrolled in the college in 2024 and allegedly faced ragging by some students. She failed her BA first-year examination and stopped attending college after the results were declared in July 2025. Her name was struck off the college rolls on August 21, 2025. The accused professor has denied all allegations, and some teachers have come out in his support. However, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad state secretary has demanded that the accused must be brought to book to ensure that such incidents do not occur in the future.
