Bengaluru's Namma Metro network is set to expand significantly by December 2027, with Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar announcing plans to add 175 kilometers of tracks. The expansion includes the construction of new metro lines, elevated double decker corridors, and extensions into the city's outskirts. Currently, the city has operational metro lines covering 96 kilometers. By 2027, an additional 38 kilometers of lines will be commissioned, including a metro line connecting the Bengaluru International Airport. This will bring the total operational route to 175 kilometers. Shivakumar revealed that the government is moving ahead with the third phase of the metro project, with tenders to be floated next month for the construction of approximately 100 kilometers of new metro lines at a cost of ₹25,000 crore. This includes 42 kilometers of double decker corridors that will carry both metro lines and road traffic. The project will be built as an elevated corridor, making it the longest of its kind in the country. Financing for the project will be provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency, with loans worth ₹15,600 crore extended to the government. Tenders for the remaining elevated corridor projects, estimated at ₹9,700 crore, will be called in January. The expansion plans also include extending metro connectivity towards Nelamangala, Magadi, Tavarakere, Hosakote, and Bidadi. Efforts are underway to finalize land for a metro station near Tavarakere, where traffic from Hassan passes through. Land acquisition remains a challenge at certain locations due to court cases and heavy traffic conditions, which have slowed progress. However, the government is committed to adhering to the agreed cost sharing model and working with contractors to ensure the project's timely completion.
