In a resounding victory, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led alliance in Goa has won 32 of the 50 zilla panchayat seats, securing a dominant mandate in the state. The alliance, which includes the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP), won 29 seats, while its alliance partner, MGP, secured three seats. The BJP and MGP fielded candidates in 43 seats, leaving the opposition to contest in the remaining seats. The Congress party, which contested in the elections, managed to secure 10 seats, while its alliance partner, the Goa Forward Party, won just one seat. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Revolutionary Goans Party (RGP) won one and two seats, respectively, while four independent candidates were elected. The opposition has attributed the BJP's victory to a split in the vote, with Congress MLA Carlos Alvares Ferreira stating that the opposition votes would have won if added together. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has hailed the victory, saying that it is a testament to the people's faith in the ruling alliance's commitment to good governance and progressive politics. Goa BJP president Damodar Naik said that the victory shows that there is no alternative to the BJP, while chief minister Pramod Sawant attributed the win to the people's rejection of the Congress party. The zilla panchayat elections were held on December 20, with voting taking place across the state, excluding municipal areas. The results were announced on Monday, with the votes being counted at 14 centres across the state.
