The Anti-Corruption Bureau in Chhattisgarh has alleged that Chaitanya Baghel, the son of former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, received a share of ₹200 crore to ₹250 crore from a multi-crore liquor scam in the state. The claim is made in a 3,800-page chargesheet filed in a special court on Monday. According to the chargesheet, Chaitanya played a key role in establishing and coordinating an extortion racket within the excise department during the previous Congress government (2018-23). He allegedly worked with other officials to transfer and manage the proceeds of the scam, and received a significant share of the funds. The chargesheet has named Chaitanya as an accused in the alleged scam, which is estimated to be worth over ₹3,000 crore. The probe has also revealed that Chaitanya received high-level protection and policy/administrative intervention, which enabled the crime to be perpetrated. The investigation is ongoing, and further evidence suggests that the total amount of proceeds of crime generated from the scam could exceed ₹3,500 crore. The allegations have sparked a controversy, with BJP president JP Nadda accusing some Congress insiders of facilitating the 2013 Jhiram Ghati Naxal attack. Bhupesh Baghel has hit back, calling Nadda's allegations an insult to the martyrs who lost their lives in the attack.
