Amar Singh Chahal, a retired IPS officer, is fighting for his life after a failed suicide attempt. His desperate cry for help has revealed a shocking tale of cyber scamming, where he allegedly lost ₹8.1 crore to scammers who promised him huge returns in the stock market. Chahal, a decorated officer who served as Inspector General of Police, was found with a gunshot wound to his chest and is currently in critical condition at Park Hospital in Patiala. In a 12-page suicide note, Chahal revealed that he was a victim of a sophisticated cyber scam, where he was convinced to part with his money by scammers operating through WhatsApp and Telegram groups. Despite advising the public to steer clear of such scams, Chahal fell prey to one himself. The note, addressed to the Director General of Police, Gaurav Yadav, details how the scammers promised him huge returns, only to pressure him into reinvesting profits and paying hefty 'service fees' and 'taxes' to withdraw his money. The scam, Chahal alleged, was highly organized, involving multiple bank accounts and individuals. He urged authorities to constitute a special investigation team (SIT) to trace the money trail and bring the culprits to book. Expressing deep distress, financial ruin, and emotional trauma, Chahal apologized to his family and colleagues, pleading for help in recovering the lost amount. The Patiala Police are probing the case, and the Punjab and Haryana High Court has stayed trial court proceedings in the Kotkapura firing case, in which Chahal is one of the accused. The case has sparked concerns about the vulnerability of high-profile individuals to cyber scams and the need for stricter measures to prevent such crimes.
