India's government think tank Niti Aayog has released a report predicting a significant surge in international students flocking to the country's institutions. According to the report, titled 'Internationalisation of Higher Education in India: Prospects, Potential, and Policy Recommendations', India could host up to 100,000 international students by 2030, with estimates ranging from 790,000 to over 1.1 million by 2047. The report emphasizes that international students are not just learners, but also long-term ambassadors of India's knowledge, culture, and innovation ecosystem. However, India still lags behind in attracting international students, with only a small share of globally mobile students choosing to study in the country. To achieve this growth, the report recommends simplifying visa processes, providing transparent fee structures, and ensuring access to quality housing, healthcare, and part-time work opportunities. The Study in India program must also be revamped into a single digital platform for admissions, visas, scholarships, and student support. Niti Aayog's report highlights the need for 'internationalisation at home', aligned with the National Education Policy 2020, to complement global engagement. A welcoming and high-quality academic ecosystem will be crucial in positioning India as a leading global education destination by 2047.
