The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has withdrawn its Class 8 Social Science Part 2 textbook after facing a court order to seize physical copies and take down digital versions.

The controversy began when the court took suo motu cognisance of the matter after a section on 'corruption in the judiciary' was published in the textbook.

NCERT issued an unconditional and unqualified apology for the chapter, stating that the entire book has been withdrawn and is unavailable.

The court had ordered the immediate seizure of physical copies and takedown of digital versions of the textbook, citing 'serious consequences' and 'everlasting impact on independence and autonomy of the judiciary'.

NCERT has committed to maintaining the highest standards of accuracy, sensitivity, and responsibility in educational content.
