Ratan Tata (28 December 1937 – 9 October 2024), the former chairman of Tata Group, the iconic Indian industrialist and philanthropist, passed away last night in Mumbai at the age of 86. On Monday he posted about his health in his social media account X ,he stated that"I am currently undergoing medical check-ups due to my age related medical conditions," he asserted. Tata had been undergoing treatment at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai and was in critical condition before his demise.
The Maharashtra government has announced a one-day state mourning today to pay tribute to this legendary figure. His final rites will be performed with full state honors, a testament to his immense contributions to the nation.
Ratan Tata was born into the renowned Tata family, being the Son of Naval Tata and adopted by Ratanji Tata.As the Grandson of Jamshedji Tata, Tata Group's founder. He graduated from Cornell University with a degree in Architecture and Joined Tata Group in 1961, working at Tata Steel. He Succeeded J.R.D. Tata as Chairman of Tata Sons in 1991.
Under his leadership, Tata expanded globally through acquisitions: Tetley, Jaguar Land Rover, and Corus. He also invested in over 30 start-ups, fostering innovation and entrepreneurship.
