The Delhi High Court has granted Umar Khalid a 3-day interim bail to attend his mother's surgery, citing her health concerns.

Khalid, a former JNU student leader, has been in custody since September 2020 in the 2020 northeast Delhi riots larger conspiracy case.

He had sought bail to care for his 62-year-old mother, who is scheduled to undergo surgery on June 2, and to attend the Chehlum ceremony of his deceased maternal uncle.

Khalid's appeal argued that the trial court's observations were 'incorrect and unsubstantiated', and that he shares a close bond with his late uncle.

He has been granted interim bail from June 1 to June 3, and has complied with all conditions in previous instances.
