US Vice President JD Vance reaffirmed his support for restricting H-1B visas, claiming that American companies are unfairly bypassing domestic talent for cheaper foreign options. At the TurningPoint USA's AmericaFest convention, Vance cited Microsoft's recent layoffs and H-1B visa applications as evidence that US workers are being overlooked. The H-1B programme has become a contentious issue among conservatives, with many criticizing America's skilled immigration system. Several politicians, including Florida's Governor Ron DeSantis and Representatives Beth Van Duyne and Chip Roy, have suggested ending the programme or implementing stricter eligibility rules. The Trump administration has taken steps to reform the H-1B programme, introducing a $100,000 fee for new applicants and announcing plans to remake the visa lottery system. Operation Firewall, an enforcement effort, aims to crack down on fraud and misuse of the programme. However, Trump's stance on skilled immigration has sometimes diverged from that of his conservative allies. In a recent interview, the President defended skilled immigration, stating that America lacks domestic talent in certain fields. Vance's comments position him as a strong advocate for limiting H-1B visas, a move that could help him maintain support among the conservative coalition that propelled Trump to power in 2024.
