The music fraternity in Manipur is mourning the death of musician Chongtham Vikram Singh, who reportedly succumbed to injuries following an alleged physical assault in New Delhi.
Expressing deep grief over the incident, Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region Jyotiraditya Scindia said the safety and dignity of every person from the Northeast is “non-negotiable.” In a social media post, Scindia urged the Delhi Police to take swift action and conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Singh’s death.
The Union Minister also extended his condolences to Singh’s family, friends and members of the music community, who are grieving the loss of the Manipur-based musician.
According to Delhi Police, Singh died after allegedly being physically assaulted in Delhi. Deputy Commissioner of Police, South East Delhi, Vineet Kumar, said that seven people have been arrested in connection with the case, while one minor has also been apprehended.
Manipur CM said on social media,
I am deeply saddened by the untimely demise of renowned guitarist Shri Chongtham Vikram.
His valuable contribution to music and the cultural life of Manipur will always be remembered with deep respect.
I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and pray for strength and solace to help them bear this irreparable loss.
May the departed soul rest in eternal peace.
The incident has sparked concern among members of the Northeast’s creative and music communities. Artists and cultural voices have expressed hope that the investigation will establish the facts and that those found responsible will face appropriate legal action.
