An urgent meeting regarding the ensuing General Election to the Village Committee Constituencies–2026 was held on Saturday at the Conference Hall of the Office of the District Magistrate & Collector, West Tripura District, Agartala.
The meeting, which began at 5:00 PM, was held under the chairmanship of the State Election Commissioner, Tripura. Concerned police officers, Returning Officers (ROs), Assistant Returning Officers (AROs), and Officers-in-Charge of the respective police stations attended the meeting.
During the meeting, various election-related issues, security arrangements, polling preparations and other necessary measures were discussed to ensure the smooth and peaceful conduct of the elections.
The upcoming elections will be held across 587 Village Committees, covering 2,634 constituencies and 4,597 seats in 52 of the state’s 58 blocks. A total of 9,61,977 voters, including 4,82,041 men, 4,79,930 women and six third-gender voters, are eligible to cast their votes at 1,550 polling stations.
The State Election Commissioner said the Model Code of Conduct has come into effect in the Village Committee areas from September 5. Voting will be conducted through ballot papers.
The last Village Committee elections were held in 2016. The tenure of the elected committees ended on March 8, 2021, but elections were delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent legal complications.
DGP G.S. Rao said adequate security arrangements are being put in place to ensure peaceful and orderly polling across the state.
