Nishant Dev : Indian Boxer Secures Spot in 2024 Paris Olympics
Indian boxer Nishant Dev has qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics after a stunning victory over Moldova’s Vasile Cebotari. Dev secured his place with a unanimous 5-0 decision in the men’s 71kg category quarterfinal at the World Boxing Qualifiers on Friday.
With this triumph, Dev joins the ranks of three other Indian pugilists who have already booked their tickets to Paris. Nikhat Zareen (women’s 50kg), Preeti (54kg), and Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain (75kg) confirmed their Olympic berths by winning bronze medals at the 2022 Asian Games.
During the second round of the match, Cebotari managed to land a couple of blows, causing Dev to appear slightly out of breath. However, the Indian boxer demonstrated remarkable resilience and continued to deliver accurate shots, ultimately securing his victory.
The evening session on Friday will see four more Indian boxers in action. Arundhati Choudhary (66kg), Amit Panghal (51kg), Sachin Siwach (57kg), and Sanjeet (92kg) are each just two wins away from clinching their spots in the Paris Olympics.
India's boxing contingent is showing strong promise, with hopes high for further qualifications as the World Boxing Qualifiers progress.
