In a much-needed victory, No. 12 Purdue overpowered Maryland 93-63 on Sunday, bringing an end to their three-game losing streak. Fletcher Loyer led the charge with 29 points, including 21 in the first half. The Boilermakers' sharpshooting was on full display, with Loyer and Braden Smith combining for 9 of 12 three-pointers in the opening half. Smith, who finished with 19 points, is just one assist away from becoming the first player in Big Ten history to reach 1,000 career points and 500 assists in conference games. Maryland, struggling under new coach Buzz Williams, suffered their most lopsided defeat at home in the arena, which they began using in 2002. The Terapins trailed 49-28 at halftime and were unable to recover. Purdue, ranked No. 4 before their recent losses, was boosted by the relatively easier schedule, which includes a matchup against Oregon next weekend. The game got off to a strong start for the Boilermakers, with Loyer hitting two three-pointers to give them a 10-2 lead. Smith then took over, making a couple of three-pointers during an 11-0 run that put Purdue ahead 25-7. Loyer added three more three-pointers and a free throw to push the lead to 25 just before halftime. This victory marked the most lopsided result in the series, which began in 2015 after Maryland joined the Big Ten. Purdue leads the series 11-6, with this being only their second double-digit win.
