In a significant move to strengthen their bullpen, the Chicago White Sox have acquired right-hander Jordan Hicks from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for prospect Gage Ziehl and a player to be named later. The deal also includes a cash component to cover Hicks' remaining salary. Additionally, the White Sox will receive pitching prospect David Sandlin, currently ranked No. 7 and No. 2 pitching prospect in the Red Sox organization by Baseball America. This trade comes as the Red Sox attempt to address their hitting needs, having recently signed pitcher Sonny Gray in a trade with the Cardinals. With a potential luxury tax bill looming, the team sought to move some arms for hitters. The White Sox, who freed up $20 million in savings by trading center fielder Luis Robert Jr. to the New York Mets, plan to reinvest in the team. They have already signed right-hander Seranthony Domínguez to a two-year, $20 million deal. Hicks, 29, struggled in his previous stint with the Red Sox and San Francisco Giants, posting a 6.95 ERA in 2023. However, he is due $25 million over the next two seasons and could provide a boost to the White Sox bullpen, which recorded the fewest saves in the majors last season. Sandlin, a 24-year-old righty, has shown promise in the minor leagues, while Ziehl, a 22-year-old 11th-round draft pick, has limited experience above Class A.
