Cedric Irving Jr., a 27-year-old from Oakland, was arrested around 3 am Friday in connection with the shooting. Beam, 66, was shot in the head on campus on Thursday and remains in critical condition at the hospital. According to sources, Irving allegedly confessed to the crime, which has sent shockwaves through the Peralta community. Beam, a beloved coach and educator, has spent over two decades at Laney College, guiding numerous athletes and helping 20 of them secure spots in the NFL. The college's community is "devastated" by the violence, with Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee describing Beam as "a giant in Oakland" who has shaped leaders for over 40 years.
